Homestay tourism in Himachal Pradesh, especially in Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu districts, is a growing business in rural areas. Expenditure and profitability both are opportunities and challenges. The purpose of present study is to study the expenditure pattern and profitability of the homestay tourism in Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh for the year 2022. Both secondary, as well as primary data have been used in the study. By going through their expenditure pattern and profitability, it can be concluded that to run a successful homestay business and to get a profit margin, the expenditure pattern should be properly managed and planned. Expenditure included durable and non-durable items, salaries to employees engaged in the homestay business and services provided in the homestay, but it can’t be denied that expenditure also led to profit. According to homestay owners, expenditure on maintenance and operating the homestay led to a significant increase in profitability. Income received from the homestay business inspired more investment for better facilities. The majority of homestay owners agreed that investment in staff training, marketing, infrastructure and amenities increased the profitability of the homestay business. By overcoming the challenges faced during the running of a homestay business, it can emerge as a sustainable alternative to traditional hospitality services.
